چکیده

In this paper, we examine a setting in which a number of partially substitutable goods is sold in sequential single unit auctions. Each bidder needs to buy exactly one of these goods. In previous work, this setting has been simplified by assuming that bidders do not know their valuations for all items a priori, but rather are informed of their true valuation for each item right before the corresponding auction takes place. In our analysis we don’t make this assumption. This complicates significantly the computation of the equilibrium strategies. We examine this setting both for first and second-price auction variants, initially when the closing prices are not announced, for which case we prove that sequential first and second-price auctions are revenue equivalent, and then when the prices are announced; in the latter case, because of the asymmetry in the announced prices between the two auction variants, revenue equivalence does not hold. We finish the paper, by giving some initial results about the case when free disposal is allowed, and therefore a bidder can purchase more than one item.

The 2002 Trading Agent Competition: An Overview of Agent Strategies

Suppose you want to buy a used Canon AE1 SLR camera at an online auction. It would be quite a daunting task to manually monitor prices and make bidding decisions at all web sites currently offering the camera—especially if accessories such as a flash and a tripod are sometimes bundled with the camera and sometimes auctioned separately. However, for the next generation of trading agents, autonom...

Bidding under Uncertainty: Theory and Experiments

This paper describes a study of agent bidding strategies, assuming combinatorial valuations for complementary and substitutable goods, in three auction environments: sequential auctions, simultaneous auctions, and the Trading Agent Competition (TAC) Classic hotel auction design, a hybrid of sequential and simultaneous auctions. The problem of bidding in sequential auctions is formulated as an M...

Decision-theoretic bidding in online-auctions

With the increasing role of electronic commerce in business applications, much attention is paid to online-auctions. As auctions become more and more popular in electronic commerce, agents face the problem of participating in multiple independent auctions simultaneously or in sequence. Decision making of agents becomes difficult when they have to buy bundles of goods. In this case the agents ha...

Autonomous Bidding Agents in the Trading Agent Competition

A natural offshoot of the growing prevalence of online auctions is the creation of autonomous bidding agents that monitor and participate in these auctions. It is straightforward to write a bidding agent to participate in an online auction for a single good, particularly when the value of that good is fixed ahead of time: the agent can bid slightly over the ask price until the auction closes or...
